The place of reference for centuries and centuries of a rich and strategic territory is the town of Casale Monferrato. Its historic center presents the features of the ancient splendours and its faceted identity: from the ancient Saint Evasio’s Cathedral, with the magnificent narthex, the Romanesque crucifix and the Cathedral Treasury Museum, up to the baroque style Synagogue and the Jewish Museums.
Crossing the heart of the city means crossing historic porticoes, elegant buildings and majestic churches. A short walk from the main streets takes you to the Castle of Monferrato, a big and "glorious" military citadel used today as a space for exhibitions and events and for the Regional Wine Shop of Monferrato.
For lovers of art and culture, in addition to monuments and sites of interest (such as the Civic Tower), Casale Monferrato preserves an enviable heritage of works of painting, sculpture and ceramics, exposed at the Civic Museum and annexed Gipsoteca Bistolfi, at the former Augustinian Monastery of Santa Croce.
The second Sunday of each month (and the previous Saturday) Casale Monferrato hosts Casale Città Aperta (Casale Open City), an event with extraordinary openings of sights, monuments and museums, with a guided visit on Sunday afternoon. Concurrently, the Antiques Market (only on Sunday in August). The Biological Market, instead, takes place the third Saturday of each monthe (August excluded).
Other important events through the year, among others, are the Regional Exhibition of San Giuseppe in March, “Riso&Rose in Monferrato” in May or the Wine Festival of Monferrato in September.
Not to be missed the typical buscuit "Krumiri Rossi di Portinaro".
