MONFERRATO NOTES /
THE NATURAL PARKS
In The Sacred Mounts of Piemonte and of Lombardia (registered on the list of Unesco world Patrimony): the Sacred Mount of Crea is situated on one of the highest hills of the Monferrato area (455m. a.s.l.) in the province of Alessandria.
It is a particularly fascinating example of the relationship between nature, religion and art: the fascination of the uncontaminated woodland countryside which offers glimpses of breathtaking scenery, can be enjoyed together with the architectonic dimensions of the Sanctuary dedicated to St Mary of the Assumption and of the chapels (23, plus 5 hermitages), and with works of artists of relevance such as Moncalvo and Alberini, representing the salient episodes of the Gospels and culminating in the majestic and unusual “Paradise”, which has been recently restored. The park has an area equipped for picnics, and offers the possibility of free guided tours (prior booking necessary); the “Paradise” chapel can be visited on holidays and on the eve of holidays, following a timetable which varies according to the season. The fatigue of the visitor who reaches the top of the hill is rewarded by the vision of a breathtaking panorama which extends before the eyes for 360°.

The River Po Regional Park (Alessandria - Vercelli tract)
Stretching from Crescentino (VC) to the confluence with the Scrivia river, the Park is made up of 5 Natural Reserves and an Equipped Area, and it is an instrumental Body of the Piedmont Region, whose objectives are:
- Conservation of the environment
- Didactic divulgation and education
- Environmental recovery and research
Of particular interest are the 8 paths for cycle tourism which meander through the Crescentino area as far as Valenza (AL) and can be identified by the signposts “In bici sul Po” (by bike on the Po). The most interesting part from the point of view of the flora and fauna is that positioned between Pontestura and Gabiano, while of particular relevance is the tract through the Valenza area: worthy of special notice is the “Garzaia”, a place where herons nest and where they return annually and an ideal destination for short horse rides.
Of considerable interest is the Visitors’ Centre, where there are two viewing rooms for the study of the flora and fauna.
The Park can be visited freely or, on prior booking, with a guide.
